During the Christmas period. online food shopping was up 26.3% for grocer Waitrose (a nice tin of sardines from the retailer is shown above).
In March, they plan to open a new "ecommerce depot", which replaces their existing one and creates an additional 100 jobs. The depot will deal with online food orders and will be double the size of the current one.
"Omni-channel" approach
Waitrose director of development, Nigel Keen, said in a press release: "Our expansion story continues as we take the brand to more customers and invest in our omni-channel approach."
Clearly they see their ecommerce as complementary to their bricks and mortar stores, which mirrors how several of how clients have both ecommerce and high street shops to allow customers the choice.
New stores
Waitrose success is not just in ecommerce. This year they are also opening 14 new shops, from supermarkets to convenience stores.
According to this article on it in The Guardian, Waitrose outperformed the only big supermarkets during this period. As well as the 26.3% increase on their website, sales in store rose by 2.8%.
